Hodinöhsö:ni'

Variously interpreted as People of the Longhouse or People of the Extended House. Hodinöhsö:ni' is the Seneca word for the Iroquois Confederacy. Often referred to as the Six Nations, Iroquois League or Haudenosaunee the confederacy was originally founded by five allied nations. The Mohawk, Oneida, Onondaga, Cayuga and Seneca with the Tuscarora being accepted into the league after 1722. Over their long history the Hodinöhsö:ni' adopted people of many nations including Munsee, Erie, Mesquakie, Susquehannock, Lenape, Wyandot and individuals of European descent. The Hodinöhsö:ni' have a rich and culturally diverse history with genealogical connections to many nations and surrounding communities.
